MANILA, Philippines — In a move to cushion Manila residents from the rising cost of living, Mayor Isko Moreno announced during the Monday flag-raising ceremony that the city will start distributing rice subsidies in April. The initiative, funded by a ₱286 million allocation from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., aims to support local rice farmers while providing relief for Manila families.
“The funds will serve 74,000 families in the City of Manila over a period of six months, every other month,” Mayor Isko explained, emphasizing the dual purpose of the program: assisting residents and supporting local agriculture. The Executive Secretary, Ralph Recto, directed the city government to implement the rice subsidy program efficiently.
The mayor also highlighted ongoing aid for the transport sector. Starting tomorrow, jeepney drivers, Transportation Network Vehicle Services (TNVS), and motorcycle taxi (MC) operators will receive ₱5,000 cash assistance to help offset the economic impact of escalating fuel prices.
Beyond direct assistance, Mayor Isko stressed the importance of sustaining the business sector: “It is very critical and crucial that we protect and help the business community because through them, our citizens remain employed. Businesses must survive to safeguard jobs.”
This multifaceted approach underscores the city’s effort to balance immediate relief with long-term economic stability. As Manila navigates inflation and fuel price surges, the question arises: can such targeted subsidies and support for key sectors truly protect the most vulnerable families in a city of nearly two million residents?
