CAVITE — Rep. Kiko Barzaga recently voiced strong criticism against the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., citing the failure to temporarily suspend the excise tax on petroleum products amid soaring fuel prices caused by tensions in the Middle East.
Barzaga emphasized that current government measures, such as fuel subsidies, are insufficient to ease the burden on public utility vehicle (PUV) operators and delivery service drivers, who continue to bear the brunt of rising transportation costs. In a Facebook post, he stated: “Ayaw pa rin nilang tanggalin ang tax sa gasolina—hahayaan niyo na lang ba na magutom ang ating mga PUV at delivery drivers?” (“They still refuse to remove the gasoline tax — are we just going to let our PUV and delivery drivers go hungry?”)
The legislator called for more immediate and decisive government action, warning that the high fuel prices may force essential service workers to compromise their livelihoods. While fuel subsidies provide some relief, they may not fully address the financial strain caused by sudden price spikes. This situation highlights a broader question about the balance between government revenue and the welfare of essential workers. As fuel costs continue to rise globally, how can the Philippine government ensure that policies protect the livelihoods of those most affected without undermining fiscal stability? Should temporary tax suspensions become a standard emergency measure during global energy crises?
