CALATAGAN, Batangas — Batangas authorities successfully rescued 32 passengers, including a baby and 20 children, after a fishing boat capsized off the coast of Barangay Punta, Calatagan, on March 23, 2026. The incident occurred around midday when the vessel, identified as Prince 2, was en route from Barangay Navotas in Balayan to Calatagan for a recreational swimming trip.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Southern Tagalog District received a distress call from a concerned citizen and immediately dispatched rescue teams. Fourteen passengers were first rescued by a passing fishing boat, while the remaining 18 were pulled to safety by the PCG response team. Fortunately, all passengers survived the incident without reported fatalities.
Preliminary investigations suggest that strong waves unexpectedly hit the vessel, causing it to overturn. While accidents at sea are not uncommon in coastal regions, this event raises critical questions about boat safety regulations and preparedness, particularly for vessels carrying children and large groups for recreational trips.
The incident underscores the importance of stricter enforcement of maritime safety protocols, including ensuring life jackets for all passengers, proper boat maintenance, and monitoring of weather and sea conditions before departure. Beyond immediate rescue, it sparks a broader discussion: How equipped are local authorities and communities in preventing avoidable maritime accidents, especially for vulnerable populations like children?
