BATANGAS CITY — Batangas City continues to gain recognition for its thriving agricultural sector, as highlighted by recent awards presented to local farmers and agricultural organizations. City Agriculturist Flor Alvarez presented the accolades to Mayor Marvey Mariño, showcasing the city’s progress in supporting sustainable farming initiatives.

Among the honorees is the Talahib-Pandayan Rural Improvement Club (RIC), which made it to the 50 shortlisted nominees for the National Gawad Saka as Outstanding Barangay RIC. Individual farmers also received recognition, such as Emmanuel Salada of Happy Thumb Integrated Farm in Barangay Sorosoro Karsada, who was awarded a Certificate of Learning Site for Agriculture I by the Agricultural Training Institute. Additionally, the FITS Center Batangas City earned a Special Citation for Most Improved FITS Center in the Techno Gabay Program (TGP) Achiever’s Award last year.

The local government credits these awards to collaborative efforts between the community and public agencies, emphasizing that organized support and technical assistance are key drivers of agricultural development. These recognitions reflect not only individual achievements but also the growing institutional capacity and commitment to modern farming practices.

The continued success of Batangas City’s agricultural sector raises an important discussion: in a country where agriculture remains a backbone of the economy, are local and national governments doing enough to replicate these models nationwide? Could strengthening community-based farming programs like those in Batangas serve as a blueprint for sustainable agricultural growth across the Philippines?
