CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — An 18-year-old woman in Cagayan de Oro City tragically died after giving birth alone inside her boarding house room, while her newborn baby miraculously survived and is now under the care of authorities. Police confirmed there was no foul play, but the mother suffered fatal bleeding after cutting her own umbilical cord.

On April 27, 2026, residents of a boarding house in Zone 6, Barangay Lower Bulua discovered the lifeless body of a young woman identified only as “Jezza,” a resident of Opol, Misamis Oriental. She was found inside the common restroom, drenched in blood, after attempting to deliver her baby without medical assistance.

Responders rushed both the mother and child to J.R. Borja General Hospital, but Jezza was declared dead on arrival. The newborn, however, survived the ordeal and is now under the custody of local authorities. Police investigators recovered a knife inside the room, believed to have been used by the mother to cut the umbilical cord.

Capt. Emilita Simon, spokesperson of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office, explained that the woman endured labor entirely on her own. “So siya ra mismo ang nag-labor sa iyang kaugalingon ug siya ra mismo ang nagputol sa kaning (umbilical) cord mao ng ga-bleeding siya ug niadto siya sa cr ug didto na siya nakabsan sa kinabuhi,” Simon said.

Authorities revealed that Jezza previously had a live-in partner, but the relationship ended when the man discovered he was not the father of the child. Police are now working to locate her relatives, as her parents have reportedly passed away. “Naningkamot pud kita nga ma-contact ang iyang mga relative niini kay gi-deny man pud siya sa iyahang previous live-in partner kay nagbuwag na sila ug hinungdan sa ilang pagbuwag ang kaning pagmabdos niya sa lahi nga amahan,” Simon added.

The incident has sparked concern in the community about the dangers of unattended childbirth and the need for stronger support systems for vulnerable young mothers. Local officials emphasized that while the baby survived, the tragedy underscores the importance of accessible maternal healthcare and family support.

This heartbreaking case in Cagayan de Oro highlights the risks faced by women who give birth without medical assistance and the urgent need for awareness and intervention to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
