MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that PhilHealth will expand and increase maternity benefits starting April 30, 2026, raising coverage for normal and cesarean deliveries and broadening prenatal and postnatal care. This move aims to ensure that mothers can give birth safely without worrying about hospital costs.
In a video message on April 29, President Marcos revealed that PhilHealth coverage for normal delivery will rise from ₱9,750 to ₱29,000, while cesarean section coverage will increase from ₱37,000 to between ₱58,000 and ₱62,000. He emphasized that the expansion is designed to ease the financial burden of childbirth, which often forces families to delay or cut back on essential medical care.
The expanded package also includes prenatal care coverage doubled from four to eight check-ups, with vaccines and laboratory tests now covered. Additionally, three postnatal follow-up visits will be included under PhilHealth benefits, ensuring continued care for mothers after delivery.
Marcos underscored the importance of accessible maternal healthcare, stating: “Maraming ina ang nanganganak na walang doktor. Hindi dahil ayaw nila ng tamang pang-alaga, kung hindi dahil hindi nila kaya ang panggastos. Ito ang nais natin baguhin.” He added that in many cases, mothers giving birth in hospital wards may no longer have to pay anything upon discharge.
The President stressed that the government’s goal is simple: to guarantee that no mother or child’s life is put at risk due to lack of money. The initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen healthcare access and reduce maternal mortality in the Philippines.
This expansion of maternity benefits marks a significant step in improving maternal health services nationwide, offering financial relief to families and ensuring safer childbirth experiences for Filipino mothers.
