QUEZON CITY, Philippines — A group of former Marcos loyalists has formally endorsed a Sara Duterte–Chavit Singson tandem for the 2028 national elections, citing Duterte’s leadership experience and Singson’s long record in public service.
The movement, composed of individuals who previously supported Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his father, announced their unified backing during press conferences in Quezon City and Cagayan de Oro.
A group calling itself the “Original 1980s & 1990s former Marcos Loyalists” declared full support for Vice President Sara Duterte’s presidential bid and former Ilocos Sur governor Chavit Singson as her running mate. The announcement came after Duterte confirmed on February 28 that she intends to run for president in 2028.
The group explained that they withdrew their support for President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. in May 2025, citing unmet campaign promises and dissatisfaction with his administration. They said Duterte’s leadership style and track record as Davao City mayor and vice president convinced them to shift allegiance.
“Mula nang marinig namin ang opisyal na deklarasyon ng ating VP Sara Duterte noong February 28 na siya ay tatakbo bilang Pangulo ng bansang Pilipinas, agad kaming nagkaisa at nag-ugnayan upang pag-usapan ang matibay at nagkakaisang suporta sa tambalang Duterte-Singson,” the group stated.
Members emphasized that Duterte’s governance in Davao demonstrated her ability to deliver progress, which they believe she can replicate nationwide. “Ipinapakita ni Inday Sara Duterte ang kanyang husay sa paglilingkod. Mula sa kanyang karanasan bilang lokal na opisyal ng lalawigan ng Davao, makikita natin ang tunay na kaunlaran, at ito ay kayang gawin sa buong bansang Pilipinas,” they added.
While Duterte has not officially named her running mate, she admitted she already has someone in mind but withheld the identity to shield them from political attacks. The loyalist group, however, openly endorsed Singson, describing him as a seasoned public servant with the heart to address the country’s problems.
The endorsement also highlighted dissatisfaction with current economic conditions, including high fuel prices and perceived weak governance. Some members compared the present situation to the pandemic years, claiming that former President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration managed crises more effectively.
This development signals a significant political realignment ahead of the 2028 elections, with former Marcos supporters now rallying behind Duterte and Singson. The Sara-Chavit 2028 Nationwide Movement has begun organizing caravans and public events to build momentum for the tandem, positioning them as a strong alternative to the current administration.
The push for a Sara-Chavit tandem underscores the fluidity of Philippine political alliances and the enduring influence of loyalist groups in shaping electoral narratives. As the 2028 race approaches, the endorsement is expected to intensify speculation about Duterte’s eventual choice of running mate and the broader coalition she will build.
